What is drip irrigation?

A micro-irrigation system or drip irrigation is a special method of irrigation under which water is directly delivered to the roots of plants. Water can be saved by drip irrigation or droplet irrigation. As we know water is scarce in many places around the world and it is our responsibility to save water for our future.

The micro-irrigation system is a method of irrigation in which small amounts of water are transported directly to the roots of plants by drains at short intervals. Due to which the plants are continuously getting water and there is no cost of water. In this, all plants can be watered in very small amounts of water. Pipes, valves, drains, and ammeters are used in this work.

In ordinary irrigation, most of the water that the plants should receive gets evaporated or either go inside the ground by water leakage which causes more water expenditure. With this new irrigation method, we can save water and irrigate the plants in less water only.

When the plants get water directly to the roots with low pressure and control is called drip irrigation but when fertilizer is supplied along with water, this method is called the fertilization process. Which prevents leaching and evaporation losses of nutrients and provides suitable crop nutrition at the right time.

Drip Irrigation Specialties

1. Through this, plants can be watered daily.

2. By this method, water always remains insufficient quantity around the root.

3. The proper amount of water and air should remain in the ground uniformly for the method of harvest. By this method, the proper amount of water and air remains in the ground, which leads to quick and accurate growth of plants.

4. Such rugged land where water cannot be reached easily, such places can be cultivated by irrigating with this method.

5. It is very good for the environment because it saves water ie it promotes water conservation.

Equipment used

Micro-irrigation system uses many types of equipment which are like this –

1. Header Assembly – In a micro-irrigation system, it plays an important role because it controls the pressure and speed of irrigation. The header assembly is also known as a bypass or non-return valve.

2. Filters – Filters are used to remove small particles of soil and algae present in the water. Because they can close the drip hole. This includes screen filters, sand filters, sand separators, settling tanks, etc. Hydro cyclone filters are used for sand or soil present in water. Sand filters are used for algae (moss) in water, leaves of plants, wood, etc. for microbial waste. Even if the water is completely clear, at least the screen filter should be used in the irrigation plant.


3. Fertilization process – In drip irrigation, chemical fertilizers are given through Venturi, Fertilizer Tank and Fertilizer Pump.

In drip irrigation, chemical fertilizers are fed through the  Venturi, fertilizer tank and fertilizer pump.

  • Venturi – Chemical fertilizers are given by Venturi only. It is a device that operates at a pressure difference. By this, the chemical stands reach the plants correctly. In this method, liquid manure reaches the plants with water.
  • Fertilizer tank – By filling liquid manure in this tank, chemical material and manure can be put immediately into this device by pressure control.

4. Mainline – A pump is used in drip irrigation from which water is transported to the  Sub Mainline. PVC or HDPE pipes are used in the mainline.

5.  Sub Mainline – Valves are placed in front of the Sub Mainline pipe to control the flow and pressure of water in it. It is necessary to install a vacuum release valve or air release at the beginning of the  Sub Mainline pipe or else the soil particles can enter the pipe and also close the dripper hole.

6. Poly tubes – Submen’s water is transported through poly tubes throughout the field as drippers are placed over poly tubes.

7. Dripper – This is a very important part of drip irrigation. It is through this that waterfalls in the fields as a drop. The hourly flow of the drippers and the maximum water in the crop is determined by a number. A land that is not equal is rugged and is recommended for drip irrigation.

Benefits of drip irrigation

Drip irrigation has many benefits such as –

  • Drip irrigation helps the crop to get the proper amount of water every day which increases the productivity and quality of the crop.
  • Through this, we save about 40 to 60% of the water from irrigation.
  • The Fertigation method can also be given to the plant inappropriate amount along with water.
  • In drip irrigation or drip, irrigation water is transported to the roots of the plants due to which weeds are not able to grow.
  • In this method weeding, weeding can be done easily in irrigation because in this irrigation water is only near the roots of the plants, but the field remains dry.
